It's fight week and it's a big one this weekend. Boston is hosting UFC 220 where there are going to be 2 title fights along with an already solid card. Here are the biggest stories to watch when you tune in Saturday night.
Quick FYI, check in later this week, as all of these topics will be discussed further in detail, so tune in everyday as we get you pumped for the PPV!
1. Heavyweight Glory
No matter what you slice it, this main event of Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou is exciting to think about. These two large men put equally large men to sleep, and quickly, with the last decision between the two coming in 2014's epic JDS-Stipe 1 in which the current Heavyweight champion lost a narrow split decision. For Stipe, a win Saturday puts him in talks of being the best Heavyweight ever, in the talks of Fedor and Cain. Should he soundly defeat Ngannou, which is no easy task, he will have one of the most impressive resumes in MMA history. For Francis "The Predator" Ngannou, this could propel him into the superstardom the UFC desperately needs. They already seem to be pushing him as the "next big thing," and a KO of Stipe to claim the belt would likely make him the next star of the promotion. Someone's historical run will come to an end, and there will be violence, so it's gonna be must-see TV.
2. DC looks to claim #2 spot
Due to the sheer magnitude of the main event, it seems that this BANGER of a co-main is being overshadowed. Daniel Cormier may not clearly be the undisputed champion due to a case of Jon Jones, but he's the UFC's 205 king and wants to prove that he is the best behind Jones Saturday night. He goes up against Volkan "No Time" Oezdemir, a rising contender with a number of quick finishes on his resume. Should DC defend the belt, I believe it will further cement him as an all-time great and likely the second best Light Heavyweight in the sport's history. Regardless of if you think he's a legit champion or not, he isn't going to care and he's going to go out and try to remove that * away from his belt, one victim at a time.
3. Breaking through at 135
Another fight that isn't really being talked about is Rob Font and Thomas Almeida. These guys are both in the top 15 of their division, with Font ranked 14th and Almeida 10th, so this is an important fight for the two of them. Either of them is 2, maybe 3 decisive wins away from being in serious talks of a title shot, so you can expect these guys to go at each other and look for the finish. "Thominhas" has gotten a post fight bonus (4 POTNs & 1 FOTN) in each of his UFC wins, including THAT knockout over Brad Pickett (it'll be in that video), so clearly he brings the violence. Font is an excellent dance partner, as he also has a couple Performance of the Night bonuses to his credit, so expect fireworks in this top 15 Bantamweight duel.
