It is FIGHT WEEK. The UFC invades the 6 and there are belts on the line. One of those belts include the currently vacant UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship. To fill that vacancy, Valentina Shevchenko squares off against former Strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in what is one of the most intriguing fights to make in Women’s MMA.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a BAAAAAAAD woman. She has some of the most lethal Muay Thai the sport has ever seen, with an array of strikes in her arsenal. It is for those striking skills that she was the second (only due to not having proficient English to participate in the original TUF tournament) and, as of this writing, longest reigning champion in division history. She destroyed the likes of Valerie Letourneau, Carla Esparza, Jesse Penne, and the list goes on. Up until Rose Namajunas, a fighter who took a couple of years to grow into her own, took down Joanna Champion, she looked quite literally unstoppable at 115 lbs. To be the first two weight women’s champion in company history, Joanna is going to have to out-strike Valentina Shevchenko, a woman who nearly won the 135 belt against Amanda Nunes. It will not be easy, but if anyone is ready for the challenge, it would be a reinvigorated Joanna Jedrzejczyk, looking to reassert herself as WMMA’s best.

Valentina Shevchenko is also a BAAAAAAD woman. She has been waiting for a 125 division to open up, as it is her true weight class, but while she waited, she beat many of 135’s best, including Rousey Killer Holly Holm and prospect Julianna Peña, outsriking the former boxing world champion and submitting the grappling superstar and former TUF winner. She has shown a great range of skill in the octagon, but we have yet to see her against faster, smaller competitors. She has often had the speed advantage, which she has used to great advantage. She pieces together combos with ease, much like her opposition, and has demonstrated great fight IQ.

If you have never given WMMA a shot, this is the fight to watch. There is almost certainly going to be fireworks and will be a great demonstration of how far WMMA has evolved since its inception into the UFC. Do yourself a favor and check this fight out.
