As a continuation of our coverage of UFC 221, we focus now on the other half of the main event in Australia: former Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold.
Much of Luke Rockhold's career in MMA has been on some of the highest stages of the sport. He only had two fights before signing with Strikeforce, where he holds the record for most submissions in the promotion, before making his UFC debut in 2013. Outside of the cage, he is an accomplished BJJ practitioner, winning a World Championship for purple belt in 2007. In Strikeforce, he went undefeated, securing the Middleweight title and defending it twice before the promotion succumbed to the mighty UFC.
After an early setback in his UFC debut against pre-USADA Vitor, Rockhold bounced back well, winning his next 5, culminating with a UFC belt to go along with is Strikeforce one. He was unable to defend that belt, however, as he lost his first defense against Michael Bisping at UFC 199 by getting knocked out in the 1st round. From then, he would be injured, postponing his octagon return to this past September, where he beat David Branch in Pittsburgh, showing that he is still dominant in the division.
Knowing he already has won UFC gold, Rockhold knows he has what it takes to win Saturday night. He goes up against Yoel Romero, world class wrestler and athlete. He is going to have utilize his length and reach against the smaller Cuban fighter and should Romero secure a takedown, look for the sub, as he has done in 10 of his 16 professional wins. This is a way to make a statement to Robert Whittaker and the rest of the MMA world that he is back and he is the best.
