THROWBACK: Cyborg vs Gina Carano in Strikeforce
It’s hard to imagine a time where you weren’t going into a Cyborg fight assuming she was about to dominate her opponent, but August 2009 was that time. Gina Carano was an undefeated 7-0 and the biggest name women’s fighter ever at that point. Her fight for the inaugural Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Championship against the then 7-1 Cris Cyborg was by far and away the most anticipated fight between two women ever in the sport to that point, and broke the Showtime MMA ratings record.
The odds opened at an even -115 for both fighters, and closed with Cyborg as a -200 favorite to Carano’s +110 underdog line. Cyborg ended up stopping Carano with less than one second left in the first round with vicious ground and pound against the cage, and a new WMMA queen was crowned. Cyborg has rattled off 12 more MMA wins since, but made her UFC debut only 22 months ago. She’ll make her 2nd defense of her UFC Featherweight Championship this Saturday at UFC 222 against Yana Kunitskaya.
