UFC 223 is full of great fights between the UFC’s best and fights with title implications, and then there is the FS1 prelim opener.
Artem “Conor’s Friend” Lobov takes on former prospect Alex “Bruce Leeroy” Caceres in a bottom of the barrel matchup for the ages. It’s the MMA equivelant of the Cleveland Browns vs the New York Jets (or like Derby County vs West Brom or something, depending on your accent). It’s like Batman vs Superman without the cool outfits, superpowers, sweet gadgets or any discernible fighting skill.
Are both of these fighters bad? Of course! Does the loser have dozens of Bellator fans awaiting them at an event in Thackerville, Oklahoma in the near future? Probably! But that doesn’t mean this fight isn’t going to be fun for (some good, but mostly) bad reasons. Artem had a really fun fight with Cub Swanson not that long ago, and Caceres is always good for an exciting fight
While Artem is looking to get his record back over .500 (current 14-14-1), he’s also looking to avoid a 3 fight losing streak. Caceres has faired slightly better as of late, clocking in at 3-3 in his last 6. Both fighters have a lot riding on their bouts this Saturday, with the loser likely flirting with the dreaded pink slip. While it may not be the most technically sound war we’ve seen in the octagon, I have no doubt these two should produce a fun fight, for one reason or another, on Saturday.
