My MMA Dream Involves Elton John

My MMA Dream Involves Elton John

When you ask most people about their biggest dream in MMA, maybe it’s them winning a fight themselves, or a dream matchup between two of their favorites, or a big underdog they root for making a big title run… mine is a little different and it involves Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sir Elton John.

It all started with Rory MacDonald’s UFC 167 bout with Robbie Lawler, it wasn’t the famous war they’d go on to have for Lawler’s Welterweight Championship, this was the first time they met in the octagon and was the middle fight on a card headlined by current champ Georges St Pierre and hot new challenger Johny Hendricks. Hendricks and Lawler would go to a split decision, with Lawler getting his hand raised as the victor…but that isn’t what birthed this dream, that came about 15 minutes earlier.

When MacDonald began his walk to the UFC Octagon settled in the middle of the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the Las Vegas Strip, an unexpected tune played through the famous battleground’s PA system to welcome The Red King. With one of the greatest welterweights who was also one of the most dangerous men on the planet on his way to do battle, the romantic tones of Rihanna’s “We Found Love” was what filled the air.

“This is a strange choice for such a bad man,” I thought to myself “Surely there are more ‘bad ass’ choice to be made.”

But that’s when it hit me. Maybe more “bad ass” shouldn’t be the goal. Maybe walking out to not-so-bad-ass songs SHOULD be the goal. What could be a bigger power move than saying “I don’t need something hard or heavy to prove I’m the shit, I can do that myself.”

The more I thought about it, the clearer it became that this could be the ultimate head game. So with this being the #1 strategy in my upcoming book “408 Tips For Getting in your MMA Opponent’s Head & Booking Your Vacation” (available exclusively at Borders), I figured I should also come up with the best song to carry out this strategy... and it came to me.

Your opponent paces the cage after making his entrance to Metallica or whatever the hell, the crowd buzzes talking about his recent nasty string of KOs he inflicted on his poor foes. They don’t think this is your night. They don’t think this is a fight you can win. Everyone is counting you out, until…

Blue jean baby, LA lady..

Elton fucking John. That’s the key. Fuck outta here with Eminem, or Metalica, or Drake or whatever the fuck. That is my MMA dream. A UFC fighter in a big fight walking out to Tiny Dancer by Elton John. Imagine walking to the cage with 20,000 MMA fan hardos screaming along to “HOLD ME CLOSER, TINY DANCER. COUNT THE HEADLIGHTS ON THE HIGHWAY".” You can’t lose after that. No way. It’s impossible.

So if there’s any fighters out there reading this, help make my dream come true. A simple song selection could fulfill the dream of sweet boy from the midwest, making this silly ride as an MMA fan all worth it. Do the right thing. Be that blue jean baby. Be that LA lady. Even be that seamstress for the band.
