PREVIEW: Jon Jones vs. Anthony Smith

The fights are tomorrow, the stage is set, and Jon Jones is back. This time around, he faces the red-hot Anthony Smith, a man who likely retired a couple of guys in his short UFC stint at 205. Many brush this off as an easy win for Jones, but let’s roll the tape.

Jon Jones is the baddest dude on the planet. Pound-for-pound, he is the most talented man to ever fight in Mixed Martial Arts. I don’t even like the guy, but it is impossible to ignore the skill he possesses. He out-strikes the best strikers, out-wrestles Olympians, and goes in for flying kicks to start rounds en route to becoming the youngest UFC champion ever. It is actually insane. When you put his extra-curriculars aside, it is clear to see a path to being the GOAT of MMA, especially armed with the knowledge he’s only 31 and now in his fighting prime. Just look at the highlight tape. Watch it and see what Anthony Smith is in for.

In the octagon, look for Jones to reassert himself as the best. The Gustafsson was not enough for that, and he knows it. He wants another finish over a guy he probably should finish. He will likely stand up to beat Smith at his own game, but if things get hairy at all, he has the ability to take the fight to the ground or get a dominant position in the clinch to land damaging shots. In short: this is Jon Jones’ playground, and we all just get the opportunity to watch.

Anthony Smith has more than a puncher’s chance. When I hear the phrase, I always think of a lucky strike landing. That isn’t how it would be for Smith. If he wins this fight, it will be because he found a way to get in Jones’ guard to land a BOMB, bombs that we have all seen him detonate on the likes of Rashad Evans and Shogun Rua.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand that there is only one way for him to beat Jones, that being the knockout. There is no world where Anthony Smith out-points Jon Jones. There just isn’t. But he has shown world-class MMA knockout power, and when you have that, you always have a good shot.
