The UFC is in Russia this weekend in a rather lackluster card in terms of names. What is does have, however, is an interesting main event between Alistair Overeem and Aleksei Oleinik! Here is a sneak peak into this weekend’s main event!
Alistair Overeem is the definition of “been there, done that.” He is a UFC HOFer in my book, between his accomplishments in PRIDE, Strikeforce, and the UFC. While he has not captured a UFC belt, his career spans 61 fights and 20 years of experience in the sport. He is one of the best strikers in the history of MMA, as well as being one of the sport’s most entertaining fighters. While he is on the back end of his career, Overeem provides a high-level match-up for anybody in the heavyweight division. In this one, look for him to utilize his striking, and if Oleinik engages in grappling, look for some knees from “The Demolition Man.”
Aleksei Oleinik confuses me. His name is spelled different ways on different websites. Can we all come to terms with one spelling please? On a more serious note, Oleinik is one of the few people on this earth whose experience is comparable to Overeem. He has 69 career fights (nice) and began his career in 1996. He is a submission specialist as his nickanme “The Boa Constrictor” would suggest. 5 of his 6 UFC wins have come by submission, so it is very clear that Oleinik is going to look for the takedown and then to choke the life out of the very large Dutch man. If he manages to get it to the ground, he will be in good shape, but that is a tall task when you are going up against Alistair Overeem, especially when you’re on the wrong side of 40.
